Sad news for the rap game once again this year. Hustle Gang’s Doe B is dead at 22 after being transported to a hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. The rapper who has been shot before, was a victim along with others of a fatal shooting early this morning and has been pronounced dead by his manager DJ Frank White. Doe B’s career really started to take off with help from T.I. and Juicy J hopping on the remix to his already popular single “Let Me Find Out“. Additionally he released his mixtape “Baby Je$us” this summer which received a lot of looks and acclaim. More details on how or why this happened as it unravels.

Seattle producer Def Dee digs into the Mello Music vaults and pulls out one of the earliest label akapelahs from Kenn Starr to craft a beat for. Director's Statement:
"The video for "Finding My Way" takes cues from the boom bap style production of the track and imagines Uptown XO as two sides of the same young man, coming of age during the mid-nineties in Washington D.C. During the first verse XO takes on the persona of a street minded hustler, spending time in alleyways, shady housing, and rooftops. While for the second verse he portrays the role of a government insider, working to enact change through the political system on Capitol Hill. These twin lifestyles echo the flip side of the same mindset, much like the dichotomy of the District itself." What do ya'll think? Spin it or Scratch it?

The Black Opera has never been known to follow rules. When the rules say you have to collab with a lot of rappers, until this point they've chosen not to. When the rules say image is most important, they've pushed their art to the forefront instead. When the rules say you have to explain to everyone what the meaning of each song is, TBO has chosen to leave it up to your interpretation and let the art speak. That has never been more apparent than with their new release "KOON SH!T". You may or may not recognize the backing soundtrack of this song depending on which era you affiliate with, but you'll undoubtedly recognize TBO's fearlessness in efforts to push the art form forward. "KOON SH!T" is the lead song taken from a spur of the moment project called "80zBabiezToDa2Gz". This ExperiMix, as they call it, was recorded at the mysterious TBOHQ in one weekend in May. TBO feels that soon is the time to expose this mix of experiments to the world. So keep your eyes and ears open for "80zBabiezToDa2Gz", until then enjoy this "KOON SH!T". So what do you think? Spin it or Scratch it?
Atlanta based artist Rocko, in this interview, points out the fact that artists end up in debt with major labels who subcontract the work needed to push and promote them. He explains how artists can bypass the need for those labels by hiring the contractors themselves. Another great example of an independent hip hop artist making it happen! Be inspired.

Frostee is a Montevallo, Al rapper who is taking us on a journey to "White street". Ironically, he is white, but within his "Welcome to White Street" intro, he explains that this is where he decided to take on a role of a rapper. Frostee has really good storytelling skills (Beer Stank, The Mask Starz 3-5 am) and knows how to draw the listener in. It's real stereotypical to say that every white rapper sounds like Eminem, so we're not going there. He actually has more of a Mac Miller sound/feel. Frostee is very witty with his wordplay. I was also very entertained by his UHF soundbites through the project as well. The movie reflects the idea of the mixtape. I love his confidence for just dropping his first project and "killing it on the first take like Skip Bayless". The beat selection was good and shows that when he gets his own beats, he is going to be a problem. At the end of the day, Frostee is the clorox within the game...breaking the mold with "White Street".

Big K.R.I.T. ended his King Remembered In Time tour in Seattle, WA on Saturday night (June 1) with a bang. Unexpected to the sold out crowd of over 400 people, “Country Shit” came on and out sprung Ludacris, who was in town doing some radio promotion. The eruption of the crowd was intense, and this was surely one of the biggest hip-hop related moments at a concert in not only El Corazon history but Seattle as well.
After the show, Sermon’s Domain got the chance to chop it up with K.R.I.T. about if he feels challenged making the music he creates after four amazing mixtapes, his decision to work with more producers on his sophomore album, not wanting to feel rushed at all with it, possibility of doing a whole project with Wiz Khalifa, why a “I Got This (Remix)” never happened and more. Hip Hop always had a way of speaking on behalf of the common man. Somewhere around the "Bling Era", that voice has began to get hoarse. Hip Hop began to become stale and stereotypical. This made Hip Hop become a "villain" among society (as well as towards fellow hip hop artists and fans). The genre needed someone to save it. It needed a hero for a ugly job. This is where Apollo Brown, Verbal Kent and Red Pill combine powers and form Ugly Heroes. The lyrics on this album are raw and define what hope is all about. The essence of overcoming within any obstacle is within every single song. Red Pill's verse on "Desperate" referring to popping bottles shows the parallel of vanity and reality. Also, Verbal Kent gives a "hot debut" to anyone who has never heard of him before this project on "Hero's Theme". Apollo Brown created some bangers on this project (Push and Hero's Theme were classic). "Never Go" is a track that will not only inspire young love, but inspiring artists as well. The chemistry (lyrics and production) are so on point. Any blue collar worker can love and appreciate this project. After hearing this project, Ugly heroes are here to save the day!

With the government and (many) churches manipulating the common people, someone needs to stand up on behalf of the ones being lead blindly. Georgia artist, M.A.J.O.R.S., does so with his gripping "Shot Fired (reloaded) Vol.2" mixtape. Not only are the beats great, but M.A.J.O.R.S. delivers a message that lingers among the listener on several topics. Alongside with the message, M.A.J.O.R.S. has a great flow. He has something on the mixtape that can appeal to the old and new school ("King I be" is a prime example). M.A.J.O.R.S. is a lyicial Malcom X with a MLK Jr. heart. What I love about this mixtape is you can learn something and bump in the whip at the same time. "Shot fired (reloaded) Vol.2" is a great listen and needs to be heard.

The third single from ST 2 Lettaz's March album, The G...The Growth & Development (following "Trillmatic" and "The Crown") is "Green Light District," an ode to "weed and drink" fitted with an appropriately foggy video. Like the best impulses of ST's former group G-Side, who broke up in September, it makes a lot out of a little. Set in one room, ST is surrounded by his friends, plus some evil college-dorm party atmosphere, thanks to plenty of smoke, frantic rays of light, and everybody turn-up-hands-ing to the squishy, trap-tinged Block Beattaz production. In between the weed shout-outs (and zingers about how wack your stuff is), ST jokes that he was rejected from the kind of colleges that now pay him to perform, and boasts about how full his Gmail inbox is at the moment. Also, the way he says "garbage" when he raps, "That shit you got is garbage" is really rewarding. It's just more evidence, if you even needed it, that even after G-Side, ST remains charismatically down to earth. What ya'll think? Spin it or Scratch it?

They say in the rap game it's all about who is the "realist". Well, Alabama native, BP Da Realist, says you can't get any realer than him bringing his new mixtape "Country Money 4". Hosted by DJ Black Bill Gates, BP Da Realist gives us some street heat with features from Gorilla Zoe, Zed Zilla, K Digga, Luv da Brain and even Gucci Mane. The first thing you can say is that BP Da Realist knows how to make a single. The mixtape is full of street bangers and good radio cuts. The production is good throughout the whole mixtape. Zaytoven and BP Da Realist have really good chemistry on their tracks together. The bars are for the street and stay in the street. However, this is the blessing and the curse for the mixtape if you want to hear BP Da Realist speak on other topics. Aside from "Come back"(which Streling does a great job producing), he keeps it gutta. The lasting impression you can say about this mixtape is that "you can put it in your trunk and beat it".

What do you get when you mix the soulful music of Jill Scott mixed with the soulful and "mellow" lyrical skills of Substantial? You would get Substantial's new project "Jackin' Jill". Just as creative as the name of the project is, so is the concept and bars. This project is filled with bars dealing with relationships and the ups and downs that go along with them. He picks some of Jill Scott's best beats and rips all of them. Even though Substantial is "jackin" Jill's beats, he makes every track sound like his own. The features are just right. The mixtape allows your girl to vibe to the production and for you to vibe to the lyrics to create a nice time together. For that Substantial, I thank you. After listening to the project, you respect Substantial more as a fan of Jill Scott. "Jackin Jill" is dope and you need to jack the project yourself.

Apollo Brown, Verbal Kent, and Red Pill recently sat down with UHF Cable Access Channel 43 for an interview about their new self-titled group album UGLY HEROES that drops 5/28/13. Hear what the record is about and check the album previews!
An Ugly Hero is considered a myth. Growing up, the heroes we saw in cartoons and movies were perfectly chiseled, intelligent, and had senses none of us possess. An UGLY HERO is the everyday blue collar individual that makes the world go 'round. These are the heroes that work hard all day, everyday to help ensure that the lives around them are taken care of, and do it all without recognition. They wear themselves into the ground and sacrifice vanity for family.

There are many times in your life where you want to find some tracks for work or a drive and put them (more so in your car) in cruise control. This is what Nate B and Eugiuenes had in mind for their "cruise control" ep. Hosted by DJ Fresh, they give us three tracks that give us a cruise style feel. The prodoctuion is good. "Mellow Monster" has a nice new age/ futuristic feel and really fits the theme of the project. However, the energetic "Celebration" sets the project off. The track placement is good and having "Kennedy" at the end is a great ending to the project. The double edged sword of the project is that it's short. I love the idea of the tracks getting straight to the point and giving us those emotions for every track that is represented. However, just as you get into the project it's over. Overall, it's something to ride to.

Nametag & Nameless present 'For Namesake' the album dropping 4/16/13 on Brick Records! It takes money to make money. This is a proverb that all hip hop artists have to understand in order to make it in the rap game. Most artists lose before they even start for not understanding the importance of getting their money up. However, Birmingham, Alabama rapper, Big Gen aka The Bread Staker, brings bars of building your budget with "Money On My Mind" mixtape. Big Gen's voice (somewhat similar to Young Jeezy) really draws you into his bars. Snipe Young's produced "Hold on me" adds flavor to the mixtape as Big Gen speaks on the rap game's influence on him. Big Gen teaches us how to get and how to keep your money. The double edged sword of this mixtape is how Big Gen pushed the theme of this conceptual mixtape. He does have his relationship tracks ("The Bomb", "Shawty Got my Back", "Crusing"), but his subject matter is very limited. However, the beat selection helps to allow the mixtape not to become stale. The best thing about Big Gen and this mixtape is that he knows how to make a single. Almost every track on here has radio/single potential. Big Gen lives up to his name as a bread stacker on this mixtape. He clearly shows us if you have money on your mind, then you can have money in you hand.

Hunstville, Alabama artists aren't slowing down steam dropping projects this quarter. Bama Starz brings us "Blackz & Bluntz" hosted by DJ New Era . The first thing that catches you is the production. Shawdi P sets the project off with the production on "Playa Talk" and you can hear the connection of Bossman's production with Bama Starz. The chemistry amongst the group shines throughout the mixtape. "High Paradise" is a great song with some heartfelt bars about the groups present state and their ambitions for their future of the group and for their loved ones. The bittersweetness of "Blackz & Bluntz" is that it sticks to the theme of the mixtape. If your a smoker, you'll love this project. However, aside from "High Paradise" and "5 deep", your going to get a lot of tracks that have the same feel to them. Overall, this is a fun mixtape and something to ride to.What's your thoughts...Spin it or Scratch it?

Check out the Official Video for the hit single and Bonus Track from K.ris R.aps "The Dope Compilation Mixtape Vol. 2" project. This is a real video and the bars to match it.I got mad respect for a convicted felon that's trying to do right and take care of their family reguardless of what society thinks of them. You can check out the mixtape at www.KrisRapsBetter.Bandcamp.Com!! Spin it or Scratch it?
Kentucky artist, Jay Elly, had caught our attention with his video submission for "Black & White". We knew after posting video that we would be reviewing his "Nobody but God" album. Jay Elly's flow is flawless. His voice puts in the mindset of Los. He did a great job with his beat selection. Ballonz and Jay Elly have great chemistry and I'll be looking out for more from Ballonz production in the future. One of the only things that disappoints about this project is the subject matter. After hearing "Black & White", I thought I was going to hear some more deeper or socially conscience tracks. I'm only saying this, because I know and can hear that Jay Elly is capable of doing more. Jay Elly is a dope artist and I don't want him to get lost in the weeds (pun intended) as just "another rapper". I truly believe that he can put Kentucky on the map and is now my favorite artist from Kentucky as he "pulls up like Martin luther king with a dream on him I will be checking out more of him in the future. Jay Elly is completely right about one thing, "nobody but God" can tell him when he will decease...and as far as career is concerned... it hasn't been called home yet.
I know that it's Thursday and you want to see a Spin Doctors Sessions, but the staff was talking about how important this interview Jermaine Dupri did with The Breakfast Club. It's encouraging for indie labels, producers and southern artists.
Check out this heartfelt video from Black Montana with "Gone". It was filmed by Cotton films, who I think is going to be a problem in the near future with videos/film. What's your thoughts...Spin it orScratch it?
Every now and then within hip hop, an artist doesn't merely make a mixtape or album...they create art. This happens to be the case with Swerve & SYP's "Cold Winters and Warm Whiskey 2". Similar to the name of the mixtape, they shift through the spectrum of life within a paradox format. I love how they can shift from tracks like "fearless" to exploring God and morality within the next track with "paradise". The bars are so vivid and gripping that you forget that the project is 18 (actually 20 with the bonus tracks) tracks long. As far as content, they show us that there "gotta be more than" typical topics. You can respect their transparency and that is what helps draw you into every track. This mixtape is really balanced with tracks on life, social issues and dope lyrics. I also love their hooks. Not only are all of the hooks catchy, but they are just as important as the lyrics on each track. This helps create more single worthy tracks on the mixtape. This mixtape defines where hip hop is going and is going to be a trailblazer. This is one of my favorite listens of the year and they do all of this while their style stays "fresh even if it's laundry day".

I'm a big fan of Tig Knight's (@tigknight) work. He goes beyond just shooting simple videos. I like the concept to this video. Naimah brings it on this track and shows off some acting skills as Cutt Dogg brings a nice verse. You can find out more about Naimah at www.OFFICIALNAIMAH.com . Let us know what you think...Spin it or Scratch it?
